I don't throw enough things out. Just never know when you'll want one of them again. I'm not really drowning in this s^H^H^H^stuff (butt you don't get to ask Connie about that). Butt I guess I *am* one of those folks who would rather hang onto a little too much than a little too little.

Now bear with me a minute here. You might be glad for it.

I was just going through a pile of old papers, obviously a bunch of which should have been discarded long ago. There was a pile of credit card receipts. I didn't go through each individual one, but I kind of fanned through them. Damn I'm glad I did.

There in the middle of the slips was a page torn out of a small notebook I carry. And on the page was a name and an address in Southern California. I looked at it and shrugged. And then saw I'd also written: "Global Schoolhouse" and "Where on the Globe is Roger." And it all came rushing back....

Just under two years ago, in early '02, I rode down through Baja. I camped a night or two in one of the most beautiful spots on that beautiful peninsula, Mulege (Moo-Leh-Hay). Was hanging out early one evening when this guy pulled in nearby in his pickup with camper shell. He had a manifold leak he had to fix, so while he wrenched, we shot the shit. What an amazing guy.

Name is Roger Williams (and I'm pretty sure he doesn't play the piano). Starting in 1994, he spent about five years touring 6 continents.

This is where Global Schoolhouse and Where on the Globe is Roger comes in. A quick search will take you to numerous internet sites. Here's one I just found:

http://www.gsh.org/roger/

Regaled me with tales of his journies. One of the most remarkable: He'd left Austrailia and headed to Japan while he tried to get the requisite papers to travel China. Couldn't get 'em. Decided he'd have to skip China and head to the U.S.S.R. and head west. When he got there, he was delayed a day or two, during which he arranged for a translator to travel across with him. He was introduced to a young woman who offered to take the trip. The next morning, he was ready to roll from the town square and there she was, ready to roll. They travelled all the way across to Moscow together and then she flew home. He headed on to Finland. But before long he flew back to her hometown to visit her.

His travels continued for quite some time. And they stayed in touch. And now they are in Southern California as husband and wife.

Anyway, he invited me to look them up if I'm ever in their neck of the woods. Well, I'd Shirley love to see him again, and meet his wife. So, I'm going to make a point of doing just that.

Damn I'm glad I found that slip of paper!
